Common Questions
How often do I need to come in for my treatments?
This is all determined by your hair growth cycle. A normal hair cycle is 3 months, which includes anagen (growth), telagen (transitional) and catagen (resting). We can only get permanent results while treating in the growth phase.
Therefore it is critical, in order to achieve results, that you come in regularly depending on the area of the body we are treating, ensuring we are targeting and destroying the hair follicle.
How many treatments will I need?
There are many contributing factors that determine your treatment programme. Ideally you would be looking at a minimum of 6 to 8.
IPL is permanent hair reduction; there are many factors that give some people quicker results than others. The number of treatments required to achieve hair reduction varies with each patient. There is no guarantee concerning the percentage of hair reduction.
You may need top up treatments at the end of your course but you should find the majority has gone for good. In general, 1 to 2 treatment may be needed every couple of years.
Will it hurt?
When treating hairs with IPL the follicle needs to be heated to 65 degrees. Consequently you will feel heat during your treatment similar to a hot rubber band flicking against the skin. Your therapist will work with your individual pain tolerance.
What can I expect after my treatment?
IPL is a heat treatment and therefore you should expect to feel hot. This is likened to a sunburn feeling. It can be soothed through cooling the skin with ice packs and soothing lotion.
Can you treat blonde hairs?
IPL relies on the light being attracted to dark pigment. If the hair does not have pigment the light will be absorbed into the surrounding tissue and provide little or no results. The more pigment within the hair the quicker and better results you should see.
Why do you need to shave prior to treatment?
For maximum results we want the heat to be attracted to the base of the hair follicle. If there is pigmentation on the surface of the skin, then you risk the energy being attracted to the surface and not targeting the desired area.
Permanent hair removal versus permanent hair reduction.
Permanent hair removal can never be guaranteed due to the hormones within our body continually stimulating hair growth. When being treated with a IPL machine that is capable to deliver energy to the depth that is required to permanently damage hair follicles, you should expect long term results with just a couple of new hairs coming through a year. This new hair growth is not coming from the damaged follicles we have treated but completely new follicles. In general, if you are not getting hairier every year then this should not be a concern.
